National and International
FSU is a member of the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) which has as its mission “to improve and advance graduate education in order to ensure the vitality of intellectual discovery and to promote an environment that cultivates rigorous scholarship”. The CGS represents approximately 500 member institutions from the US, Canada, and abroad. These institutions account for more than 90 percent of all U.S. doctorates and over 75 percent of all U.S. master's degrees that are awarded each year.
FSU is participating in several national initiatives that have been spearheaded by the CGS.
PhD Completion Project
The Council of Graduate Schools selected Florida State University’s Office of Graduate Studies to participate as a partner in the national Ph.D. Completion Project. Funded by grants from Pfizer Inc and the Ford Foundation, the Ph.D. Completion Project is a seven-year project that addresses the issues surrounding Ph.D. completion and attrition and ultimately aims to produce the most comprehensive and useful data on attrition from doctoral study and completion of Ph.D. programs yet available.
Responsible Conduct of Research and Creative Work
To promote the creation of model programs that integrate research ethics and scholarly integrity into the structure and the climate of the entire graduate school research experience the Council of Graduate Schools selected Florida State University’s Office of Graduate Studies to participate in the national initiative, Responsible Conduct of Research, funded by the Office of Research Integrity and the National Science Foundation. The resulting product for FSU is its spring one-credit-hour interdisciplinary course, the Responsible Conduct of Research and Creative Endeavors.
Professional Master's Program
Professional Science Master's Degrees
The Sloan Foundation’s Professional Science Master’s is a degree option for students in the sciences or mathematics, who choose not to pursue a Ph.D., but need additional training and skills necessary to work in government, business or industry. Most of these two-year degrees include a professional component such as an internship or team project.
Professional Degrees
In 2002, after noting a trend in professionalization of master's degrees offered by social sciences and humanities departments, the Ford Foundation began promoting the development of Professional Masters (PMA) programs in the humanities and social sciences.
At FSU, in addition to the Professional Science Master’s in Computational Science and the traditional professional degrees, such as Law, Medicine, Business Administration, Social Work, or Nursing, the Department of Political Science offers the Professional Master’s in Applied American Politics and Policy.
