Filming Recommendations

  1. Keep it short and simple – Aim for 5-8 minutes concise, well-paced video, which is more effective than a lengthy one.

  1. Be clear & articulate – Speak naturally and with confidence. Enunciate your words, and keep a steady, comfortable pace to ensure your message is easily understood.

  1. Be Creative – Bring your personality into the video! Consider using unique storytelling perspectives to make your content more engaging.

  1. B-rolls and background – Try including additional footage (B-roll) like research activities, or your grad work which can make your video more dynamic. A visually appealing background with good lighting also helps set the right tone.

  1. Minimize background noise – Choose a quiet location, external noises can be distracting, so test your audio before recording.

  2. Recording   If you will be using your smartphone to record the video, we recommend filming it horizontally in landscape mode as most videos filmed vertically on cell phones do not upload to the best visual quality and format on YouTube. Please make sure the device is placed around your eye level as this would be the best angle. It helps if you avoid (or try and reduce) the dreaded "shaky cam," so please keep the camera/cell phone stationary while filming. *NOTE: for the highest quality video, it is ideal to film on a smartphone as it doesn't rely so heavily on specific software.
